![]() One of the flaws in these systems was that sensitive electronics would suffer from failures after prolonged fire. There have already been experiments with incorporating electronics into firearms, most notably with the XM-8 and OICW projects. More advanced scope packages on the SRS-99 include rangefinding and elevation data. At the very least the weapons have some form of ammo counting system, compass/GPS (that even functions on unexplored worlds), and possibly other systems like digital zeroing and shooter biometric ID. It is pretty clear that UNSC weapons have some form of electronic suite or computer inside. Last night, I got to thinking about another factor that hints at just how truly high tech the UNSC weapons actually are. Likewise a round previously reserved for massive anti-tank rifles and mounted autocannonsHMGs (14.5x114mm) is now used in a sniper rifle that unaugmented Marines can fire from crouched or standing position with some degree of accuracy. An interesting counter argument is that in the UNSC full sized rifle rounds (7.62x51mm) have supplanted intermediate rifle rounds (5.56x45mm/7.62x39mm) meaning the UNSC must have some pretty advanced form of recoil compensation. Much debate is made about how UNSC firearms are using centuries-old cartridge types in most of their weapons, which leads people to say these weapons are way below what the UNSC tech level should be at.
